Gijs van Oenen was born in 1959, and studied political science at the University of Amsterdam. After getting his M.A. in 1986, he was awarded a research appointment in philosoophy of law, and received his Ph.D. from the University of Amsterdam in 1994. Since december 1994 he is lecturer in ethics and legal philosophy at the Department of Philosophy, Erasmus University Rotterdam, The Netherlands.
